Organic milk production restarted with low investment and high reliability

Organic milk production restarted with low investment and high reliability

Organic milk production returned to Tranegård near Helsinge in North Zealand in early 2021 after many years without dairy cows. The restart is based on an organic Jersey herd milked in a four-year-old Mobistar milking parlour supplied by Milcotec – Dairy Systems Denmark.

Part of the milk is processed on-site into yoghurt, ice cream, chocolate milk and drinking milk at the farm’s own dairy, while the remaining volume is delivered to a local dairy.

Focus on manure, land use and direct sales

Farm owner Morten Schultz does not come from a cattle farming background and operates another business alongside the dairy production. The daily operation is handled by a feeder manager and an assistant, caring for approximately 110 organic Jersey cows, of which 10 are used as nurse cows and are not milked.

One of the main reasons for establishing milk production was access to high-quality organic manure for the farm’s arable land.

The farm operates around 700 hectares of cereals, seeds and oilseed rape, making livestock manure a valuable resource in the overall crop rotation.

On-farm dairy and consumer experience

Around 10 percent of the milk is currently processed at the farm dairy and sold directly through the farm shop. The location close to a large summerhouse area makes Tranegård well suited for direct sales.

Visitors can see grazing cows, visit the farm shop and gain insight into how milk is produced, creating a strong connection between consumers and farming.

The long-term goal is to increase the share of milk processed on-site as demand for local, organic dairy products continues to grow.

Reliable milking with a used Mobistar milking parlour

Milking is carried out in a used 2x12 Mobistar 60-degree side-by-side swing-over milking parlour, installed in an existing empty farm building.

According to feeder manager Kent Mathiesen, the system is reliable, easy to operate and well suited to the size of the herd.

A practical advantage of the Mobistar system is that all milk lines and hoses are blown dry after washing, preventing frost damage during winter.

Routine service is performed as needed, and the farm keeps essential spare parts in stock to handle minor issues internally.

Why choose a used Mobistar milking parlour?

The decision to invest in a used milking parlour was primarily driven by low depreciation costs and financial flexibility.

Milcotec – Dairy Systems Denmark supported the project from the beginning, including layout planning and design of the entire barn setup, which was built from scratch inside an existing empty building.

The result is a simple, cost-effective and operationally stable milking solution that fits the farm’s long-term strategy.

A flexible foundation for future growth

With a reliable milking setup, organic production and a growing on-farm dairy, Tranegård has established a flexible foundation that allows the business to develop gradually without heavy upfront investments.

The used Mobistar milking parlour plays a key role in keeping costs under control while ensuring stable daily operation.
